PI News
Editorial by Dietmar Bohn
Dear PI Community,
A PI membership provides numerous opportunities to contribute to the development of industrial communication and automation technology.
PI member companies participate in over 80 working groups that develop and disseminate specifications and guidelines. Members can also review and comment on documents, offering their practical experience.
Additional benefits include the free use of relevant patents, technical services from the PI community, a wide range of marketing offerings and events, and continuous information on innovations and current developments.
Our extensive portfolio of technical software, software tools, test software, and technical online-services provides significant added value for device manufacturers and technology providers. Over 20 offerings help reduce development costs, shorten development times, and ensure high product quality and interoperability. Seventeen of these offerings are exclusively available to PI member companies.
Some tools support creating, verifying, and editing electronic device descriptions, from GSD files for PROFIBUS and PROFINET to EDDs, FDI packages, and IODDs. For IO-Link, the IODD Checker assists in creating device descriptions, and the IODD Viewer clearly displays their contents. With the IODDfinder, manufacturers can make their IODDs available and users can quickly find the appropriate files. This facilitates standardized device integration and ensures efficient engineering.
Additional tools help manufacturers prepare for required certification tests. The PROFINET Test Bundle includes the necessary documents, test systems, and electronic test cases. The PROFIdrive Profile Tester supports developing PROFINET devices with the PROFIdrive or ENCODER profile. Supplementary Trial Test Bundles allow for early testing, but they are not intended for official certification. After signing a collaboration agreement, member companies can gain access to the PROFINET Tester source code.
PI also provides free tools. For instance, the network load calculation tool supplements the PROFINET Planning Guide and streamlines the design of planned networks. Both are available to download for free of charge by anyone.
Additionally, specialized software can be purchased from the PNO. This includes the FDI Tools & Components, which were developed in collaboration with the FieldComm Group for creating and testing device descriptions, user interfaces, and documentation. The F-Host Tester, developed in collaboration with interested host manufacturers, helps prepare PROFIsafe F-hosts for the conformance test.
The close link between participation and practical benefits is evident in the Community Stacks for PROFINET and PROFIdrive, too. These stacks provide standardized functions and defined interfaces, simplify implementation, and can be adapted to different hardware and software platforms. Upon completion of the respective license agreement, member companies gain access.
The SRCI-SDK offers development support and test software for implementing the Standard Robot Command Interface (SRCI) for robotics. Test tools for MTP are currently in development.
All of these offerings are based on a common goal: using standards to create reliable, interoperable, and marketable products more quickly and of high quality. We encourage you to share this information with member companies and interested parties so that they can take advantage of our portfolio and contribute their expertise to the PI community. You can find an overview at https://www.profibus.com/products.
I hope you enjoy reading the August issue.
Sincerely,
Dietmar Bohn (Executive Director, PNO)
The Future of Device Certificates
MRCDs allow users to swiftly identify PI technologies products lacking a valid PI certificate.
In June 2026, the first version (V1.0) of the specification for machine readable device certificates (Order No. 2.77.2) was published. PI is not only working to automate the processing of certification applications; in the future, machine-readable certificates will also be available for PROFINET devices. These are created by the certification office and embedded in the GSDX container of the tested GSD file.
The document “Machine Readable Conformance Declaration” (MRCD) contains the definition of the file format for the machine-readable conformance declaration. It describes the tested and certified functions of a device and makes them available to engineering systems for validity verification.
This will enable certification information to be evaluated in the future in a machine-readable format and automatically by engineering systems.
An MRCD contains the declaration of conformity for a PROFINET device represented by a DAP, as well as multiple declarations of conformity for profiles, provided they are supported by that PROFINET device.
The MRCD specification is available for members to download here:

Showcase Your Company at the PI Joint Booth Without the Hassle of Setting Up Your Own!
Companies that want to exhibit at relevant industry trade shows, such as Hannover Messe and SPS, do not need to plan their own booth. With the company kiosk, member companies have access to their own presentation space at the PI joint booth. This option requires significantly less organizational effort while providing full brand recognition.
The key benefits are:
- Your own presentation space included: - A customizable display panel (120 x 75 cm), mounted at an angle on a pedestal. It features a pull-out shelf for a laptop and keyboard, a lockable storage compartment, and brochure holders for materials up to DIN A4 size.
- There's no need to build your own booth. We handle setup, takedown, logistics, and insurance. To save yourself the hassle of printing and shipping, you can opt to book graphic printing, lamination, and shipping of the display panel through us. All we need is the print file.
- Visibility for All Trade Show Visitors: Your company name will be listed in the exhibitor directory.
- Visibility within the PI community: As part of the PI joint booth, you will benefit from being located near the PI technology presentations and from the high foot traffic at the entire booth. Visitors interested in PI technologies, such as PROFIBUS, PROFINET, PROFIsafe, PROFIdrive, IO-Link, MTP, and omlox, as well as other PI technologies, will find you in the immediate vicinity.
- The presentation can be flexibly expanded. You have the option of adding a rental monitor (19", 24", or 42"). Delivery, setup, and replacement in case of failure are included. This allows you to display digital content without having to bring your own equipment.
- Hospitality is included: Focus on your appointments while our hosts and hostesses treat your trade visitors to drinks and light snacks at the booth.
You can also take advantage of the product display options (device booking) as usual. We would be delighted if you would also volunteer as booth staff as part of the working group's activities. The booth thrives on your support, and new volunteers are very welcome!

Live Demonstration: "PROFINET — All-in-One for Process Automation" at ACHEMA 2027
For ACHEMA 2027, the PNO is developing an entirely new live demonstration with the theme “PROFINET — All in One for Process Automation” — the “Swiss Army Knife” of process automation.
Instead of focusing on individual functions, the demonstration will showcase PROFINET’s capabilities as an end-to-end communication platform for process automation. At its core is a homogeneous network in which all components communicate with one another without gaps or intermediate gateways. PROFINET is the process automation standard, and leading process automation manufacturers are joining forces to demonstrate this open standard's capabilities.
The consistent, end-to-end use of PROFINET, or the "Revolution in Process Automation," opens up new possibilities in terms of flexibility, availability, diagnostics, asset management, safety, and future digitalization and IIoT applications.
Starting at ACHEMA 2027, companies will have the opportunity to actively participate in the live demo wall with devices, components, or systems and present their solutions as part of this forward-looking overall concept. Control system manufacturers can participate by booking a company kiosk for the respective trade show. From there, devices on the wall will be controlled.
As before, the demo will run for three years and will include ACHEMA 2027, SPS 2027, HMI & SPS 2028, HMI & SPS 2029, and HMI 2030.
Participation costs (for devices) are expected to differ from previous demos and will be published shortly in a circular. Connection via company kiosks will incur a charge based on the kiosk price for the respective trade show, which will be communicated through the marketing program.
To secure your spot in this important demo and learn more, please email dh(at)profibus(dot)com.

2.242; V 2.4; June 2026
It is the purpose of this specification to define roles and tasks for the parties involved in the test and certification process for PROFIsafe devices.
It is highly recommended to clarify the all-over test and certification procedure with an "Assessment Body" very early in the development process. This specification is proposing a "standard" procedure that is harmonized exemplary with IFA and TÜV. In any case the "Assessment Body" is responsible for the safety assessment of a particular device.
The roles and tasks of the PI Test Laboratories (PITL) are defined in detail within this specification. After a successful conclusion of the tests and reception of a test report by the PITL, the applicant can apply for a certificate issued by the PI Certification Office.
This version of PROFIsafe Test Specification refers to PROFIsafe V2.6 what includes PROFIsafe V2.6 MU2.1 and IEC 61784-3-3:2023.
Standard Robot Command Interface SRCI
3.252; V1.6; June 2026
This document describes the specification of all required features required for developing a unified standard robot interface (RI) between robot controller (RC) and a Programable Logic Controller (PLC).
The RI will allow the PLC to send motion and other commands to the RC and check the status of the robot.
This specification defines the communication mechanism between the RC and PLC and standardizes definitions and robot commands among different manufacturers.
The target of the RI will be the basis to create a mechanism for controlling a robot directly from the PLC without requiring additional programming at the RC side, e.g. using the original robot’s HMI pendant.
