Updating older power plants with PROFIBUS

Most of the existing power plants in Europe are more than 20 or even 30 years old. So in many instances, a lot of investment will be required to update and modernize these old plants. Recently, Jämtkraft AB in Sweden decided to update its Lungvik power plant with a large-scale Profibus installation and integration in an automation system for continuous control.

For the Lungvik project, a complete set of field instrumentation with Profibus PA was supplied by Endress+Hauser for connection to a Honeywell control system via Siemens DP/PA Links. All in all, some 500 tags were involved, of which 400 were Profibus PA devices and 100 were conventional instruments with HART. With this installation, the plant in Lungvik is perhaps the most integrated fieldbus installation to be found in these parts of the world.
In order to make the investment sustainable, the company aims to achieve the full benefit from this modern fieldbus integration, and thus focuses on Plant Asset Management, Life Cycle Management and Calibration Management.

Profibus together with a relevant combination of tools and services, provides the Lungvik staff with just the right level of information and support to make their work easier and the investment sustainable.
At the Lungvik power plant of Jämtkraft AB in Sweden, Profibus PA proved to be an excellent
technology to update older power plants. Hundreds of PA field devices along with effective tools for asset and life cycle management made Jämtkraft`s Lungvic plant something of a
pioneer in modernizing power plants.
