Profile
The itm, Institute of Information Technology for Mechanical Engineering, is an institution of the Technical University of Munich. The main research and development activities at itm are focused on distributed intelligent industrial automation systems with their major aspects: develpment of system and test equipment, industrial communication and test and diagnotics. Another research and development focus is on the engineering management area.
Most of the related activities have the main purpose to transfer research results into the industrial environment, which is achieved by close co-operation with industrial partners. During this process different solutions of conceptino, development, implementation, commissioning and support of automation systems based on PROFIBUS and PROFINET are worked out.
Demonstrators:
The PICC at itm is based on multivendor installations of the production and chemical process area incorporating a wide range of components from different manufacturers. The competence site has 4 main demonstrators that cover different aspects of the PROFIBUS and the PROFINET technology:
- PROFIBUS DP production demonstrator: bottling line
- PROFIBUS PA application demonstrator: neutralisation plant
- PROFIBUS DP interoperability test system: used for certification purposes
- PROFIBUS / PROFINET production demonstrator: robot based serial production testing cell
The PROFINET demonstrator shows the use of PROFINET in a test system for reflection light scanners. The plant cuts into the 3 modules high bay racking, robot and exerciser, which are each carried out as PROFINET components.
The plant tests the correct function of reflection light scanners stored in a high bay racking. The test items are fetched out of the racking by the portal and put on a robot-accesible position. An image recognition system mounted above this position ascertains the proper position of the items, before the robot transports them onto the rotary plate part feeding of the exerciser. After the test the robot sorts good and bad test items on apart pallets, using an interim storage to avoid frequent pallet changes.
The plant is composed of 4 PROFINET components: the above-mentioned 3 modules plus a plant master. The components use different kinds of physical devices provided by different manufacturers. The devices in the plant are from the following manufacturers: Bosch, Bürkert, Hilscher, Kuhnke, Moeller, motoman, Pepperl+Fuchs, SEW, SICK, Siemens, SIG positec, Yasnac.
