Successful standardization activities in China

Chinese PROFIBUS Organization (CPO) and PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET International) are recording great success in standardizing their technologies in China. In November 2010, the Standardization Administration of the People’s Republic of China (SAC) adopted both PROFINET IO as well as PROFIdrive as Chinese national standards (PROFINET IO: GB/Z 25105.1–.3-2010 and PROFIdrive: GB/Z 25740.1–.2-2010). This occasion was honoured in an official ceremony at the house of the minister in Beijing in the presence of more than 50 high-ranking representatives. This is the result of a close cooperation between the experts of PI and the national Chinese standardization committee SAC/TC124 Industry Process Measurement and Control.

The GB/Z standard type is applied to new technologies. Such standards have a limited validity period, typically 3 years. The use of standardized technologies in applications is recommended in China. If proven, these can be carried over into a binding national GB/T standard type. The experts in China have already begun to advocate the necessary activities for converting PROFINET IO and PROFIdrive to a GB/T-Standard.

PROFIBUS previously achieved the status of a GB/T in 2006 (GB/T 20540.1–.6-2006). It has been the leading fieldbus in the Chinese automation market for several years and is experiencing unprecedented constant growth in its market share. Rapid growth in China for PROFINET can now also be expected as a result of the recent successful standardization activities.
