PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET International) views the announcement by Innovasic that it is introducing a real-time Ethernet switch supporting the PROFINET protocol as another important milestone for further dissemination of PROFINET. The fido5000 REM switch from Innovasic offers easy access to PROFINET technology. The REM is a 2-port switch that can be integrated with a large number of microprocessors. As a result, device manufacturers can develop PROFINET devices with two Ethernet interfaces and IRT support. The PriorityChannel™ technology integrated in the REM switch recognizes PROFINET frames and forwards them preferentially.
“The step of integrating the PROFINET protocol in a switch block will make it easier for device manufacturers to integrate powerful switching technology in their products,” confirmed Karsten Schneider, Chairman of PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET International). “Devices equipped in this way not only exhibit higher performance in the network but also provide for greater reliability in operation.” Network components that can differentiate real-time protocols from less time-critical standard Ethernet frames offer the possibility of handling real-time data preferentially. As a result, these data can be processed quickly even in heavily utilized networks, thereby ensuring smooth communication.
