FDI - Field Device Integration

FDI - Field Device Integration

PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET International) welcomes the agreement between the EDDL Cooperation Team (ECT) and the FDT Group (announced at the 2007 Hanover Fair, Germany), which will see them combine their efforts and resources for the purpose of developing a uniform solution for integrating devices that is compatible with both technologies. Both users and manufacturers alike will benefit from this kind of jointly developed technology.

The basis for the technology, which is called Field Device Integration (FDI), was developed at the itm - Institute of Munich's Technical University and was first presented to the public at NAMUR's 2006 Annual General Meeting under the name FDD UA. NAMUR (International User Association of Automation Technology in Process Industries) is extremely interested in FDI and has already expressed a desire to participate in its development (NE 105).

Since then, the FDI team kick-off meeting has already taken place. The objectives are to define use cases, draw up the specification and implement prototypes for verification. Upon completing PI will integrate FDI into PROFIBUS and PROFINET.
