IO-Link is not a new field bus, but rather a point-to-point connection between a peripheral module and an I/O field device. It is based on the familiar 3-wire connection for a digital switching signal, whereby the signal is implemented as a serial telegram. In this way additional information in the form of a serial protocol between the I/O level and the field device can be exchanged.
